International Holocaust Remembrance day: education is the key

In the 18th century, Kant pointed out that "man can only become man by education. He is merely what education makes of him". The International Holocaust Remembrance day must be a moment to honour the memory of the innocents who perished during this tragedy but it should also be a time to initiate a reflection on human nature, on the fact that choices have to be made and that one is free to make them.

Remembering the Holocaust is educating young generations but also the whole society to prevent new genocides. Remembering the Holocaust is to give to each of us the possibility to develop into a responsible, critical, liberated individual and to face evil with defiance. In a time where democratic values of Europe are challenged on multiple fronts, our key is education.
